21st World Youth Goe Championship 17-21 Aug-2004 Vancouver

The championship was held in Richmond in a very nice hotel. On the first day, after the early meeting for teams captains, all the players could listen to an interesting presentation of ING rules by Yu-Chia Yang, secretary of ING foundation, well known for his new approach to teaching go. I discovered a very interesting situation involving two 4-bent in the corner.

With the opening ceremony, we could understand that this championship will use two official languages: chinese and english with the nice translation of Mrs Chang from East Canada. This is typical of Vancouver city where 1/3 of the population is chinese and where the chinese characters are very present in the streets, shops and restaurants.

The championship is divided in 2 categories : Junior : -12 years old and senior : -18 years old.

10 children were qualified as junior and 12 for senior. Most of them are asiatic people as even Canadian and American representatives are from oriental families.

The first round of the five rounds preliminary swiss tournament was held in the afternoon. All the junior games were recorded using computers by the organisers ; for seniors, the winner had to record his game after his match.

The tournament was well organized: almost every day, after the games, some touristic visits or nice dinners were scheduled. For today, a bus was waiting for all of us at 16:30 PM for a city tour and a nice dinner in a Korean/Japanese restaurant.
