21st World Youth Goe Championship 21-Aug-2004 Vancouver

Semi-finals and finals

One of the most exciting day was certainly the one where semi-finals and finals where played. Even if only 4 players of each group were concerned, all other players could enjoy the brilliant commentary of Yong-Jik Moon, 5dan professional from Korea and captain of Korean team. Other go fans from all the world could watch two games which were broadcasted live on IGS.

In both groups, the final was between Korea and China. It seems clear that Japan will have few chance of winning if they do not send some young professional to beat the Chinese and the Koreans.

In the junior group, Jung-Hwan Park, the young Korean manage to take the lead in the final game on Yulin Tong 1P. A terrible séméaï between two dragons took place but Yulin couldn't do anything being clearly one liberty late.

In the senior group, the two last games were very close. On the board, the lead was for also for the Korean player by 1 point but due to a penalty of 1 point for using more time in prolongation time (10 minutes), the winner was the Chinese prodigy Ling Yi GU 2p.

After the closing ceremony, everybody was invited for a 4 hour party on a boat where we could admire the beautiful city of Vancouver from the sea while eating a super dinner or playing a last farewell go game, even with the 4 professional players participating to this World Youth Goe Championship.

As a conclusion, we could see that after 5 days of friendly matches, all the young players did know each others better and became international friends. Thank you, Mr Ing!!
